Dinosaur Barbecue Opens Tonight at 5pm

We've been anticipating Dinosaur Barbecue opening since January last year and have kept a close eye ever since. We wait no longer. Tonight at 5pm Brooklyn's Dinosaur Barbecue opens to the public. The restaurant was in soft opening mode over the weekend with friends and family Thursday - Saturday and a VIP event last night. Stage's Upstate 'cue was served for each occasion and we had the good fortune of attending. Here's a look at the space and some of the 'cue.

Construction Well Underway at Dinosaur BBQ BK

Work started earlier this year inside 604 Union Street, where Dinosaur Barbecue will open later this spring. But a lot was done to the restaurant's facade recently. Large holes have been cut from the brick wall to make way for windows, and a steal foundation is in place to support a large awning.

Construction for the windows cut into a mural that was painted in dedication to Raul Vasquez Jr., who was the victim of a stray bullet in 1995. Dinosaur founder John Stage, after seeking out Vasquez's late mother, got permission to relocate the mural. It'll remain on the building's facade, and bricks from the original will be used in various places throughout the restaurant's interior. More pictures after the jump.

Pig Island Sails to Governor's Island Labor Day Weekend

Pig Island is an annual celebration of pork and booze held on Governor's Island.  Tickets are available here.  General admission is $85 but there's an Early Bird package for $70 available for purchase until August 17th.  Ticket price includes food and booze.

The event includes 25 of the best chefs from around the city, butchering and cooking demos, local beer, local pigs, and local wine from New York State's Finger Lakes and North Fork.  King Phojanakong (featured in the video) will be there.  As will Anthony Sasso of Casa Mono and John Stage, the man behind Dinosaur BBQ.  Dale Talde will also take a boat to the island for the event September 1st.  It'll probably his first chance to leave Brooklyn as his latest project Pork Slope, opening August 18th, will be just two weeks old.

Pig Island | Saturday, September 1st | 1130am - 4pm | rain or shine

Dinosaur BBQ to Open in Park Slope

After years on the road selling Gianelli sausage from the back of a 55-gallon drum hitched to his motorcyle, John Stage opened the first Dinosaur Barbecue in Syracuse, New York. That happened in 1988. Ten years later Rochester, NY got a Dinosaur. Then in 2004 Stage brought his 'cue to Harlem. Troy, NY got a taste of Wango Tango in 2010, and work is underway on a Newark, NJ location.

Now it's Brooklyn's turn. A sign taped to the former Perfect mechanic shop at 604 Union Street (btwn 3rd and 4th Aves) reveals Stage is applying for a liquor license. A community board meeting is to be held tonight at 65 6th Ave. Let’s hope the Dino reps get themselves a liquor license so we can get this ball of prehistoric barbecue rolling.
